A Visit to Burger and the All-New Burger 180′ Motor Yacht
A Visit to Burger Boat Company
In April I had the great pleasure of boarding a plane at FLL headed for Burger Boat Company in Wisconsin. As the oldest U.S. custom shipyard, Burger has a rich history of building incredible custom yachts with a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and a team of expert skilled craftsmen, designers, and mechanical specialists.
So, Who is Burger Boat Company?
Burger Boat Company, located in Manitowoc, Wisconsin was established in 1863. Burger is one of the oldest shipyards in America, with over 160 years in shipbuilding. The founder, Henry Brauburger, began his journey in shipbuilding at the age of 18, in 1857. Over the years, the shipyard grew and evolved with the changing times. They merged with other local builders and expanded their expertise in wood sailing ships.
In 1915, the shipyard officially became known as, Burger Boat Company, and started producing wood cruisers ranging from 80 to 100 feet in length. Innovation has always been at the forefront of the company’s ethos, and in 1938, Burger made history by constructing the first all-welded steel auxiliary ketch built on U.S. shores.
As times changed, so did the focus. In the 1960s, Burger shifted its production to power craft and aluminum construction, ceasing the production of sailboats and steel yachts. This shift allowed Burger to embrace new technologies and meet the evolving demands of the industry.
Through the years, Burger has continued to make significant milestones. In 1973, they launched the 99-foot yacht Buckpasser, which featured an all-aluminum construction and even a helipad. And now, in 2024, the all-new Burger 180 features a state-of-the-art design. This remarkable yacht represents the largest private yacht currently produced in the USA, marking a significant milestone for the shipyard. Today, Burger is well known and highly respected throughout the industry as an innovative custom superyacht builder, producing some of the finest vessels on the water.
Once I arrived at the Burger corporate offices I sat down to share a cup of coffee with Ron Cleveringa, Burger’s Senior Vice President, before heading to the shipyard. We discussed some of the 160 years of history in boat building at Burger. Ron gave me a glimpse into Burger’s history sharing some of the company’s photos spanning many decades, and we discussed current and upcoming projects, plans, and models. Seeing this U.S. yacht builder with a rich history and passion for innovation and craftsmanship was exciting.
Next, we jumped into the car and took a short drive to the shipyard. Upon arrival, we did a walk-through of the newest vessel in the Burger superyacht lineup, the Burger 180 Motor Yacht, which was already stacked before my arrival.

The New Burger 180 Motoryacht
To celebrate Burger Boat Company’s 160th anniversary, they announced the construction of a fully custom 180′ superyacht that is currently well into production in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. This presents an exceptional opportunity for the new owner to create their dream yacht right here in the United States. They can incorporate custom touches and design elements without the usual lengthy engineering process associated with new-build yachts of this size.
